Wednesday, December 16, 2009 .::TIME TO LEARN KOREAN!! BASICS: THE HANGUL ALPHABET::. ㅎㅀㅀ - all these characters im sure youve seen before on packagings blah blah. Right lets make it simple. This is the only majorly used writing system in korea so once you learn how to read each individual character u can read almost any book , text in korean , tho deciphering the meanings needs quite an effort. FYI korean also uses chinese characters , tho not so commonly. Chinese meanings and words have also been borrowed over. Fg or example , this word in chinese 音量 ( read as yin liang ) means volume of sound , and its meaning and word is borrowed into korean and read as 음 령 eum ryang ( i - u - m ry-ah-ng) see the similarities? The readings are quite close. Same goes for names. All koreans have chinese names. Chinese names can be easily converted into korean too by searching the korean reading of each character of the name and reading aloud as you would read a chinese name , surname first. E.G. 陈秀慧 chen xiu hui - is read as 진수혜 jin su hye ( ji-n soo hi-yeh). Meanings are also ambiguous since an phrase 수도 could have loads of meanings , and there are few chinese words put in to indicate it. RIGHT LETS START WITH THE FIRST ONE: ㅂ This has a "b" or "p" sounds as in " ba" and "pa" Usually when it is put on top or to the left hand side as in 뱌 or 빙(this is placed on top) it is read as "b". But if it is placed at the bottom 쟙 it is read as 'p' ㅈ This has a "j"sound as in "jane". It can also be pronounced 'ch' as in 'chin', tho this reading is not as commonly used. It can only be placed to the left hand side 쟈 ,top or bottom밪 ㄷ This has a 'd' or less common 't' sound as in 'dad' and 'tell'. It can only be placed to the left hand side ,top or bottom ㄱ This has a 'g' or less common 'k' sound as in 'good' and 'king'. It can only be placed to the left hand side ,top or bottom. "k" reading is usually used in names or when it is followed by a previous formation which has a "k" sound to it as in 릭강 - rik kang ㅅ This is an 's' sound as in "sing". It can only be placed to the left hand side ,top or bottom. ㅛ This is an 'yo' sound as in "yoyo". It can only be placed at bottom or middle as in 료 / 둉 ㅕ This is an 'yeo' sound as in "marc yeo". It can only be placed at the right hand side ㅑ This is really simple and is read as ya as in "yaya". It can be placed only on right hand side. ㅐ This one is more difficult. It is written in romanization as "ae". It sounds a bit like "eh" but less rough as in "sarang ae". It can only on place on right hand side. ㅔ this one is "e" and read as , "eh!" , without the exclamation of course. It can be onli placed on right hand side. DO YOU NOTICE A PATTERN? THE VERTICAL STRAIGHT LINE ONES CAN ONLY BE PLACED ON RIGHT HAND SIDE , WHILE THE HORIZONTAL STRAIGHT LINES CAN ONLY BE PLACED BELOW. RIGHT , next : ㅁ This is a "m" as in "ma". It can be placed bottom , top or left side. ㄴ This is an "n" as in "nap". It can be placed bottom , top or left side. ㅇ This has 2 readings : "ng" as in "fang"or a silent reading. If it is placed to left side or on top , it is silent. If it is placed below , it is "ng" . e.g : 당 - dang ㄹ This also has 2 readings : "r"as in "row" or "l" as in "la". If placed on top or to left side , it is read as "r" , if placed on bottom , it is "l" as in 갈 - gal ㅎ This has a "h" sound or no sound. When it is placed left-side or ontop , it is "h". when below , it is silent. ㅗ This is a "o" sound. It can only be placed at bottom ㅓ This one is a bit tricky. It is "eo" and read as "i-yo" read quickly as in "leo". It can only be placed on right hand side. ㅏ This is really simple , an "ah" sound. It can only be placed on right hand side. ㅣ This is an "i" as in " ee". It can only be placed on right hand side. ㅋ This one is a "k" sound as in "king". It can be placed left hand , top or bottom. ㅌ This one is a "t" sound as in "talk". It can be placed left hand , top or bottom. ㅊ This one is a "ch" sound as in "change". It can be placed left hand , top or bottom. ㅍ This one is a "p" sound as in "pack". It can be placed left hand , top or bottom. ㅠ This one is a "yu" sound as in "you". It can be placed only on bottom. ㅜ This one is a "u" sound as in "moon". It can be placed only bottom. last of all , ㅡ This one is a "eu" sound as in "eww". It can be placed only on bottom. NOTES: if a consonant like ㄱ/ㅋ forms with ㅗ , it is written as 고/코 , not written seperately SPECIAL CONSONANTS: 와 This is a "wa", can be placed only on top 외 This is "oe" a bit tricky , for chinese students this is read as "ui" from "hui".
